Is the American GI Forum the same organization as the American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program ?

No, but there is connecting history. The American GI Forum is a membership organization of veterans formed in 1948. It has chapters of volunteer members throughout the U.S. This organization founded the “National Veterans Outreach Program” in 1972, but established it as its own separate organization. The new American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program, Inc. was incorporated in 1972 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the services of veterans in need, and was sanctioned by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a charitable organization under section 501(c)3 of the IRS code this making it eligible to receive donations for its work, and the donors may consider this a deductible donation. The American GI Forum of the U.S., and its affiliate state chapters (i.e. American GI Forum of Texas, etc.) continue to perform volunteer work in communities throughout the country.

Are all veterans eligible to receive services at the National Veterans Outreach Program (NVOP) offices?

Interested veterans should inquire with the center closes to them for detailed eligibility information. In general, the NVOP provides assistance to homeless veterans, recently discharged veterans (within 48 months of discharge), veterans with disabilities, and veterans with barriers to employment, such ex-offender status, history of substance abuse, or history of frequent unemployment.

Do you provide housing assistance to veterans?

The American GI Forum Residential Center for Veterans located in San Antonio, Texas offers transitional and permanent housing opportunities for homeless veterans. The facility has accommodations for both male and female residents. Additionally, the NVOP can assist homeless veterans with families short-term housing assistance through apartment leases. The organization also offers housing for elderly persons with limited incomes through three separate apartment complexes in San Antonio. These apartment complexes, specifically designed for the exclusive housing of elderly residents, can accept veterans and non-veterans, and they must be self-sufficient and meet an income criteria.

What type of job training does the organization provide?

Eligible veterans may receive classroom vocational skills training, on-the-job training, or basic skill upgrade training, depending on the needs of each individual case. The NVOP case managers will develop a case management plan for each participant enrolled, that will describe the objectives sought by the veteran, and the benchmark goals that will measure the progress. Some veterans may not require job training, so the NVOP provides several direct job placement opportunities through an in-house representative with the Texas Workforce Job Bank, job preparation component that helps the veteran prepare their resumes, and an inter-active learning lab where the veteran may research a variety of web sites offering job opportunities.

Are there any fees charged for the services of the organization?

The NVOP does not charge veterans for any service provided. The NVOP also offers an array of support service vouchers to help veterans seeking employment, including gas vouchers, some assistance with tool purchases when required for hiring for a job, and referral for other support services such as rental assistance, utility assistance, and food or clothing support.

Does the NVOP provide assistance for the spouses of veterans?

Although our program is focused on providing assistance to veterans, we currently have funding to assist spouses of veterans that are homeless or at-risk of homelessness. When appropriate, we refer spouses to community partners that may be able to help them.

Where can I find the nearest office for assistance?

The NVOP currently operates only in Texas with locations in six Texas cities. The street addresses and phone numbers are located in the Contact Us section of our website.

Does the American GI Forum NVOP provide assistance with VA benefits?

No. The NVOP focuses its efforts on helping veterans with job training, employment placement, housing assistance, sheltered work center for the disabled, support services, basic skills upgrade, and extensive support and case management for the homeless veterans. NVOP case managers have strong work linkages with other organizations that specialize in VA benefits and other veteran entitlements to which they can refer the participant.
