Big Give 2018: Laurie’s Story

After a tough divorce and unexpected financial strains, 7-year army veteran, Laurie, was forced to give up her home. “When you have kids and realize you are about to become homeless, it is terrifying,” she said. After weeks of struggling to find a home for her and her family, a friend referred Laurie to the American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program’s (NVOP) Rapid Rehousing Program. Through the support of the program, she now has a home and a job with the flexibility that enables her to take her two children to school each day and assistance with paying rent until she becomes self-sufficient again. “We have made leaps and bounds since coming to the NVOP. I am so grateful for this organization,” Laurie said joyfully. “Now that I am settled with my family again, I can start saving up for small kitchen appliances and other supplies for me and my kids. We had to move from our previous home very quickly and could not take a lot with us.”
